Santa Clarita Mayor Urges Holiday Shoppers to Buy Local: Open Rewards Offers 5% Cash Back to Support Two Struggling Business Areas

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · California · GSM News

Laurene Weste, mayor of Santa Clarita, a city in Los Angeles County, California, has urged residents in a signed city column to keep their holiday shopping and dining local this season and support small businesses across the city. Small businesses employ local residents, support local organizations and events, and help create the community's character, she wrote.

Weste singled out two business areas facing particular difficulty. Businesses along Bouquet Canyon have been affected by an ongoing road closure that makes it harder for customers to reach them. In Old Town Newhall, businesses are still recovering after the Main Street fire. Many shops, restaurants and services in both areas remain open and ready to welcome customers, she said.

The city's Open Rewards program is part of the appeal. Shoppers can earn 5% cash back on qualifying purchases at participating businesses in both areas by downloading the free Open Rewards app and securely linking a credit or debit card, or by uploading receipts. Weste said the program stretches holiday shopping dollars while putting those dollars directly back into local businesses.

She encouraged residents to visit a favorite restaurant, discover a new shop, buy a gift certificate or check an item off a holiday shopping list locally, saying every purchase matters. Details about Open Rewards are on the city's ThinkSantaClarita.com Shop-Local page.
