Gary Locke Endorses Connie Chan as San Francisco Congressional Race Nears Its Finish

SAN FRANCISCO — With the November 3 vote approaching, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and former Ambassador to China Gary Locke has announced his support for San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan's bid for the U.S. House of Representatives. Local outlet Mission Local reported on October 30 that Chan's campaign also unveiled an endorsement from Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, whose name appears on the endorsement list on Chan's campaign website.
Chan faces California State Senator Scott Wiener for the seat in California's 11th Congressional District, which covers most of San Francisco, left open by the retirement of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The two finished first and second in the June 2 primary and meet again in the November 3 runoff. Pelosi publicly endorsed Chan in May.
The South China Morning Post reported on October 31 that Chan was born in Hong Kong, was schooled in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States at age 13. She has served as the District 1 member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors since 2021. If elected, she would become the first Asian American to represent San Francisco in Congress.
In the final stretch, both campaigns have stepped up outreach to the Chinese American community. Mission Local reported that Wiener held a Chinese-language media briefing and that his team said it had been calling voters who requested Chinese-language ballots, while Chan took part in Chinese-language media interviews and get-out-the-vote events in Chinatown.
