New York Commits $10 Million to Renovate Manhattan's 14th Street Y: Total State Support Reaches $15 Million

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on October 30 that the state will provide $10 million to support a major renovation of the Sol Goldman YM-YWHA, known as the 14th Street Y, in downtown Manhattan, New York County. With an additional $5 million secured by State Senator Brian Kavanagh, total state support for the project reaches $15 million; the full renovation is projected to cost $52.3 million and will proceed in phases.

Part of the Educational Alliance, the 14th Street Y is the only Jewish Community Center in Manhattan south of 59th Street, with UJA-Federation of New York as a partner. The center serves tens of thousands of people each year through arts and culture programming, early childhood education, summer camps, fitness and aquatics, Jewish life programs and older adult services, while parts of its building infrastructure have fallen out of service and require renewal.

The governor's office said the state funding will help restore and modernize the community landmark so it can keep serving downtown residents for decades. The remaining project cost will be covered by the institution's own fundraising and phased investment, and the center expects to maintain operations in stages during construction.
