San Diego County Parks Earns CAPRA Reaccreditation With a Perfect Score

Monday, November 2, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Diego County Parks and Recreation, in San Diego County, California, has again earned national reaccreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), meeting all 154 national standards for a perfect score. The award was presented September 29 at the National Recreation and Park Association's Best of the Best ceremony.

Earlier this year, a CAPRA review team conducted a five-day virtual review covering planning, policies, staffing, recreation programming and community engagement. In its summary report, the team praised the department's preparation and professionalism, and cited it as a model for standards including employee orientation and organizational culture, risk management and recreation programming.

The county parks system operates 159 facilities, more than 60,000 acres of parkland and nearly 400 miles of trails. Director of County Parks and Recreation Jason Hemmens credited the achievement to the team's passion and dedication.

CAPRA accreditation is regarded as the gold standard for park and recreation agencies and is renewed every five years. The department said accessibility upgrades remain a priority, with recent accessible restrooms, parking, pathways and playgrounds added at Village View and Heritage parks and the new Padres Park at San Dieguito.
