Halloween Weekend Snow Hits the Sierra Nevada: Chain Controls on Highway 88, Two Passes Closed

Winter weather over Halloween weekend continued to affect California's Sierra Nevada on November 1, bringing mountain snow, road controls and coastal rain. Caltrans said that as of the afternoon of November 1, chain controls remained in effect on Highway 88 from east of Ham's Station to five miles west of Pickett's Junction because of snow and ice.
The National Weather Service office in Sacramento had issued a winter weather advisory for elevations above 7,000 feet from 8 a.m. October 31 to 7 a.m. November 1; on the morning of November 1 it said precipitation was weakening and conditions would dry out in the afternoon, though scattered snow showers were still possible in the morning with snow levels as low as 5,500 feet. Caltrans' QuickMap showed Monitor Pass on Highway 89 and Sonora Pass on Highway 108 both fully closed for snow on the afternoon of November 1. Snow levels were forecast to hold at 7,000 to 8,000 feet before dropping to 6,000 to 7,000 feet overnight.
In Southern California, a "Pineapple Express" atmospheric river brought rain and high surf to coastal counties, and the National Weather Service in San Diego issued a flood advisory for coastal Orange County. Another Pacific system is expected to reach Northern and Central California by November 3 with a new round of mountain snow and valley rain.
