Office of Hawaiian Affairs Awards $500,000 to Ho'oulu Lahhui to Help Kua O Ka La Charter School Build a Permanent Home in Hilo

In Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, it was announced on November 1 that the Native Hawaiian organization Ho'oulu Lahhui has received a $500,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) to support education in the Native Hawaiian community. The funding will help the organization strengthen connections between Native Hawaiians and family, culture, land and water, under OHA's "mana i maoli ola" strategic outcomes framework.
At the heart of the project is the purchase of a public facility in Panaewa, Hilo, to secure a permanent home for Kua O Ka La charter school, so it can provide Hawaiian culture-based education and community support services for future generations.
Board chair Keonelehua Kalaway (Keonelehua Kalawe) said the grant supports the final phase of the organization's disaster recovery: after the 2018 Kilauea eruption, the organization lost 600 acres including the Kua O Ka La campus, which had been located in Puala'a. Founded in 1995, Ho'oulu Lahhui is a nonprofit that works with the community to revive Hawaiian culture, values, beliefs and ways of life toward unity, harmony and overall well-being.
