Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

United Flight 169 struck a light pole above the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach to Runway 29 at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, on the afternoon of November 1. The pole and a truck below were damaged and the truck driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries; no one aboard the aircraft was hurt. The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it is investigating.

Airport officials and authorities said the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. The Boeing 767-400, flying from Venice, Italy, to Newark, made contact with the light pole above the southbound lanes during approach. The plane then landed safely; all 221 passengers and 10 crew members were uninjured. The truck belonged to Baker Express and was carrying bakery products to the Newark airport cargo area; its driver, Warren Boardley of Baltimore, suffered minor injuries. Dashcam footage captured the moment of impact; the striking object may have been an aircraft tire or falling debris.

Port Authority police and New Jersey State Police responded to the Turnpike scene, and FAA and New Jersey Turnpike Authority personnel inspected and collected evidence at the site on the evening of November 1. Any effect on runway operations or highway traffic remains subject to further updates from airport and highway authorities. The FAA said the investigation will examine the aircraft's approach altitude and path and the pole's position.
