Delaware, Ohio Holds the State's Largest Veterans Parade: More Than 1,600 People and Nearly 200 Units March

The annual Delaware Veterans Parade stepped off at 3 p.m. on November 1 in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, with more than 1,600 participants in nearly 200 units, in what is considered Ohio's largest veterans parade. The parade started at the main gate of the Delaware County Fairgrounds, marched east on Pennsylvania Avenue, turned onto Sandusky Street through downtown, and ended on Wilmer Street south of Ohio Wesleyan University. Units included veterans, military color guards, marching bands, floats, classic cars and motorcycles.
A veterans social and expo was held at the fairgrounds around midday that day, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This year's parade marked the 20th anniversary of the safe return from Operation Iraqi Freedom of the U.S. Army Reserve's 454th Transportation Company — "Delaware's own company" — which deployed from Delaware in 2005 and came home in November 2006.
Organizers said the parade honors veterans, active-duty service members and military families, and that Delaware has deep military ties: during the Civil War it was an important camp where Black volunteers mustered and trained to join the United States Colored Troops. Large crowds lined the route as downtown filled with red, white and blue.
