Governor Shapiro on CBS: Officials Must Lead by Example, Condemns Dangerous Rhetoric as Election Nears

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on CBS's Face the Nation on November 1 that as Election Day approaches and campaign rhetoric heats up, officials must "lead by example" and bring back decency in the face of cruel rhetoric. Shapiro was first elected governor in 2022 and is seeking re-election this year.
In the interview he spoke about threats against him and his family and recalled the 2025 arson attack on the governor's residence after a Passover seder, saying the episode "weighs on him but does not control him." Asked about campaign rhetoric in Senate races in key states such as Michigan, Shapiro called those remarks "dangerous and full of hate."
According to the CBS Face the Nation transcript, Shapiro also made Pennsylvania's U.S. House races a closing theme of the interview, saying he aims to help Democrats win four more House seats; a Quinnipiac University survey of likely voters shows Shapiro himself with a large re-election lead and Democrats ahead by 15 points on House control. Under Pennsylvania law, counties may not begin pre-canvassing (opening and preparing) mail ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day, November 3, so some races may not be decided on election night.
