Queer Chinese Collective Stages Three Los Angeles Shows Reimagining Butterfly Lovers and the White Snake

In Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, the Passion of the Cut Sleeve Collaborative, a queer and trans Chinese performance collective founded by Chinese American artists, will give three performances on November 7 at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and November 8 at 2:30 p.m. at the Davidson/Valentini Theatre of the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Founded in Los Angeles by Nico Pang, Monica Chen and Zo Shay, the collective uses theater, poetry, drag and traditional Chinese instrumental music to reimagine tales such as Cut Sleeve and The Fragrant Companions, alongside familiar love stories such as Butterfly Lovers and Legend of the White Snake.
Music director Zo Shay said the collective grew out of a desire to perform traditional Chinese music alongside other queer musicians. The group has also invited composers, writers and artists to develop original works inspired by queer Chinese stories, and the program includes "A Thousand Years of Waiting," the theme song of the 1992 television series New Legend of Madame White Snake.
