Prescribed Burn Training Set for November 6 in Lincoln County, New Mexico: 50 Acres or Fewer at Fort Stanton

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Bureau of Land Management announced in Roswell, New Mexico, on November 2 that it will join the U.S. Wildland Fire Service to conduct a prescribed burn for training purposes in Lincoln County on November 6. The burn will take place on 50 or fewer acres at the Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area in the Salado Dam Area, north of U.S. Route 380.

The operation is weather dependent and will take one day to complete, the BLM said.

Smoke from the burn may be visible from Ruidoso, Capitan, Lincoln and nearby communities. Although smoke should not impact highways, personnel will post signs along roadways to inform motorists about the potential for smoke, and the agency reminded motorists to use caution by reducing speed and watching for fire personnel and equipment.

The BLM encouraged public land users to continue to be careful with fire. To report a wildfire on public land, call Alamogordo Interagency Dispatch at 877-695-1663. For more information on the prescribed burn and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service fire and hazardous fuels reduction program, contact Fire Management Specialist Dominic Bell at 575-627-0327.
