Garner Felon Murad Terrell Taylor Sentenced to 137 Months for Gun Possession After Road-Rage Shooting and High-Speed Chase

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced that Murad Terrell Taylor, 26, of Garner, North Carolina, was sentenced to 137 months in federal prison, over eleven and a half years, for possessing a gun as a convicted felon. Garner is in North Carolina, and the shooting took place on a stretch of road in Johnston County. U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan imposed the sentence, in Case No. 5:25-CR-269-FL.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, on September 5, 2025, Johnston County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report that a driver had fired a gun at another car traveling along Veterans Parkway in Garner in a road rage frenzy. The bullet smashed through the front passenger door and, thankfully, did not injure the other driver. The victim provided deputies with the suspect vehicle's license plate number, and the case ended after a multi-county high-speed chase in which Taylor was found with the gun.

Taylor pleaded guilty on July 15, 2026. He had already been tried in state court for shooting at the victim and received a lengthy state prison sentence; the federal sentence adds further accountability.

"This gun toting convicted felon will no longer terrorize the Johnston County community," said U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle. The ATF and the Johnston County Sheriff's Office investigated the case. (Source: U.S. Department of Justice)
