MFA: German and Swiss Presidents' Successful Visits Set a Good Example for China-Europe Relations

At the regular press conference in Beijing on November 2, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the successful visits to China by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Swiss President Guy Parmelin sent positive signals of stronger communication and coordination, closer open cooperation, and support for multilateralism and free trade, setting a good example for the development of China-Europe relations.
Mao said this was President Steinmeier's first state visit to China in nearly eight years and the Swiss president's first visit in seven years. President Xi Jinping held talks and a meeting with the two leaders respectively.
On China-Germany relations, Mao said leaders of the two countries agreed that, as the world's second- and third-largest economies, the two countries should shoulder their responsibility for safeguarding world peace and development and for building a more just and reasonable global governance system. The two sides spoke highly of the fruitful outcomes of bilateral relations and agreed to uphold mutual respect and equal treatment, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, deepen people-to-people exchanges, properly handle differences through dialogue and consultation, and open a new chapter in the China-Germany all-round strategic partnership.
On China-Switzerland relations, Mao said the two heads of state agreed to respect each other's core interests, consolidate political mutual trust, make full use of dialogue mechanisms in various fields, deepen bilateral and multilateral coordination, jointly support multilateralism and free trade, and take China-Switzerland relations to a higher level. The two heads of state also witnessed the signing of the protocol upgrading the China-Switzerland free trade agreement and cooperation documents in areas including scientific research, labor and employment, and media.
Mao said that as the world undergoes accelerated changes unseen in a century, with growing turbulence, China stands ready to work with all parties to focus on cooperation and mutual benefit and provide more certainty for world stability and prosperity.
