Social Security Benefits Rise 3.6% in 2027: An Average of $75 More a Month for 76 Million Americans

Monday, November 2, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 14 that Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will rise by a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, covering about 76 million Americans, with retirement benefits increasing by an average of about $75 a month.

The increase reaches the two programs on different dates: nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the 3.6 percent adjustment beginning with payments in January 2027, while increased payments to about 7.3 million SSI recipients will begin with the December 31, 2026 payment. Some people receive both Social Security benefits and SSI.

'Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability,' said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. Under the Social Security Act, the annual COLA is tied to the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), as determined by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The notice timeline runs through this month: people with a personal my Social Security account can view their personalized COLA notice online starting in late November, up to three weeks earlier than a mailed paper notice; those without an account must create one and enroll in paperless notices by November 18 to see the notice online. Everyone else will receive the simplified one-page paper notice by mail in December, showing the exact dates and dollar amounts of their new benefit and any deductions. For Medicare enrollees, the 2027 premium amount will also be available through the my Social Security Message Center starting in late November, with Medicare information at medicare.gov.
