San Francisco Mayor Signs Legislation to Expand City's Only Wholesale Produce Market: New 67,000-Square-Foot Warehouse Planned

On November 2, 2026, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie signed legislation revising the long-term lease between the City and County of San Francisco, California, and the SF Market, clearing the way for a new 67,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution building at 1900 Kirkwood Avenue, with construction expected to begin in 2027. The SF Market is San Francisco's only wholesale produce market, supplying fresh produce to restaurants, grocers, small businesses and communities across San Francisco and the Bay Area.
The SF Market campus in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood currently includes approximately 485,000 square feet of warehouse and distribution space and is home to nearly two dozen independent produce merchants. The mayor's office said the new building will expand distribution capacity and give existing merchants room to grow, creating approximately 125 permanent onsite jobs and 134 construction jobs. The market currently sustains more than 500 onsite jobs and supports thousands of businesses across the Bay Area.
The lease revisions also provide greater flexibility for future development across the market's 23-acre campus, supporting its long-term reinvestment plan. San Francisco's Office of Economic and Workforce Development worked with the SF Market to advance the revisions.
Beyond wholesale distribution, the market's Food Recovery Program donates fresh, unused produce from its merchants each morning to community organizations including Meals on Wheels San Francisco, Bayview Senior Services and Farming Hope, distributing an average of more than 4,000 pounds a day and surpassing 10 million pounds donated since its launch in 2016. Earlier this year, the mayor also signed legislation establishing a new Office of Food Security Coordination to strengthen the city's response to food insecurity.
