Follow-Up: One Dead, Eight Wounded in Birmingham Post-Classic Shootings; Mayor Says Incidents Were Separate, 17-Year-Old Held for 48 Hours

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama, November 1 — Two shootings minutes apart near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after the Magic City Classic college football game on Saturday night, October 31, were separate incidents, Mayor Randall Woodfin said at a Sunday afternoon briefing, leaving one person dead and eight others injured in total. A 17-year-old is in custody on a 48-hour hold and the investigation is still active.

Woodfin said the first shooting happened at about 7:50 p.m. on Saturday in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue near Legion Field, leaving six victims; less than eight minutes later, a second shooting across the street from the stadium left three more victims. The detained 17-year-old had a gun fitted with a Glock conversion switch and is not affiliated with either university. Birmingham Fire and Rescue dispatched crews at about 7:55 p.m.; Fire Chief Cory D. Moon said the nine victims range in age from 19 to approximately 30, with one pronounced dead at the scene, two of those taken to hospital in critical condition and five in stable condition. Police have asked the community for help gathering video and set up a portal for witnesses to submit evidence anonymously.

The Magic City Classic is the annual rivalry game between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, the state's two largest historically Black universities, with a tradition of more than eight decades; Saturday's game took place at the nearly century-old Legion Field, which seats 71,000. Woodfin said the classic has been known as family-friendly and safe, and wrote on social media: “No argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration.” Birmingham police said late Saturday that all Magic City Classic tailgating had been suspended. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said at a Saturday news conference that he was “very grateful that more people weren't injured.”

The violence came one week after a shooting near Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, in which 11 people were wounded, including six juveniles. There have been at least 393 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.
