Detroit Launches Project 1,000: 1,000 New Neighborhood Homes by 2031

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

In Detroit, in Wayne County, Michigan, Mayor Sheffield's November 2 municipal update reported that the city last week officially launched Project 1,000, a comprehensive citywide strategy to build the public and private-sector capacity needed to deliver 1,000 new infill homes in Detroit neighborhoods by 2031.

Under the plan, every City of Detroit department that touches a new home, from land and zoning to permits, water lines and blight removal, will work from one plan toward one goal: making it easier and faster, with fewer barriers, to build new homes in Detroit. The Project 1,000 working group will measure new housing production across a broader range of new construction of one-to-four family homes, including single-family detached houses, duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes, townhomes and condominiums.

The city said the plan follows a decade of concentrated neighborhood investment, the first three consecutive years of net population growth since the 1950s, and the rehabilitation of over 24,000 properties, leaving many Detroit neighborhoods primed for new construction and infill housing development.

The same update reported other municipal progress. Mayor Sheffield and the Public Lighting Authority's Brighten Up The Block initiative has installed 2,000 new mid-block streetlights; the project, announced in mid-July with a goal of 3,000 lights, is two-thirds complete, with the remaining 1,000 to be installed in the next two months.

On housing, MiSide Community Impact Network has begun construction of Wesson Avenue Apartments, a four-story, mixed-use, $19.3-million development that will add 32 deeply affordable apartments to southwest Detroit's East Chadsey-Condon neighborhood at 5850 Michigan Ave, with completion expected by next summer. Developed with the City of Detroit, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and other partners, it sits next to the 40-unit Campbell Street Apartments MiSide opened in April 2025; together the two projects bring 72 affordable apartments to formerly vacant land along the Michigan Ave corridor.

The update also reminded residents that Detroit polls for the November 3 general election are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., that voters must vote at their assigned polling place and should check the address before leaving, and that anyone in line by 8 p.m. has the right to vote. The city's Fall Fest will be held Saturday, November 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Chandler Park and is free for all ages.
