Rubio Marks Panama's 123rd Independence Anniversary: U.S. Aid Delivered Within 24 Hours of Earthquake

Monday, November 2, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Department of State released a statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the evening of November 2 (early November 3, Eastern Time) congratulating the people of Panama on the 123rd anniversary of their independence. Panama declared independence from Colombia on November 3, 1903, and November 3 is its national day.

In the statement, Rubio said Panama is one of the United States' most important partners and that the U.S. will continue to stand with Panama as it recovers from the recent earthquake. He said the strong partnership allowed the United States to deliver humanitarian, logistical, and technical assistance within 24 hours of the disaster.

The statement reviewed advances in the relationship this year: Panama joined the Shield of the Americas, the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, and Pax Silica. Together, the two countries showed their commitment to the security of the Panama Canal during PANAMAX, the first large-scale live exercise in 14 years.

In the year ahead, Rubio said, the two countries will deepen their security partnership and pursue new trade and investment opportunities. Panama is making historic investments in the Canal and seeking investment in technology, cybersecurity, and other critical infrastructure, as well as health and education. He wished the people of Panama a joyous celebration.
