San Jose Breaks Ground on Ocala Avenue Safety Project With Raised Median

The City of San Jose, in Santa Clara County, California, broke ground on October 29 on the Ocala Avenue Safety Improvement Project: along Ocala Avenue in East San Jose, between Everwood Court and Hillmont Avenue, the two-way center left-turn lane will be replaced with a raised median. Construction is expected to finish by mid-December.
The project is the second phase of safety work on the corridor. The city said this stretch of Ocala Avenue, near a school, has seen many crashes; a raised median reduces conflict points from mid-block left turns and U-turns, channels turning traffic to controlled openings and helps slow traffic. Breaks in the median will allow safer, better-controlled left turns at designated points.
In April 2022, a mother and daughter, Narindar Kaur and Kuljit Kaur, were struck and killed while crossing Ocala Avenue. The city has since accelerated safety upgrades on the corridor, including a high-visibility crosswalk with flashing lights. The current project is funded by the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, which uses a data-driven approach to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries.
Councilmember Domingo Candelas, whose District 8 includes the corridor, attended the kickoff. The Department of Transportation said the road will remain open during construction and urged drivers to slow down through the work zone. When complete, the new median will match the recently installed median on Ocala Avenue west of Capitol Expressway, giving the roadway a consistent layout.
