Registrar of Voters Details Election Night Counting: First Results at 8:05 p.m., Public Observation Throughout

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · California · GSM News

The Orange County Registrar of Voters in California has laid out its election-night counting process for voters: after polls close on November 3, the first election results will be posted at 8:05 p.m., and ballot processing and counting are open to public observation throughout. The county received $3.2 million in state funding dedicated to this general election.

Returned ballots move through envelope sorting and scanning, signature verification, opening and ballot scanning at the processing center, with observation areas at each step. To handle the larger workload and expand public viewing, the Registrar this year moved ballot processing into a larger space with a bigger observation area, where observers can watch the process up close.

On equipment reliability, the Registrar has run logic-and-accuracy tests on each of its roughly 400 election systems since October 6 to confirm the tabulation equipment reads ballots correctly. The office reminds voters that election-night figures are preliminary; mail ballots and provisional ballots continue to be processed afterward, and final results are released only after the official canvass is complete.

Orange County voters can track their ballot through the Registrar's website, ocvote.gov, or observe in person at the ballot processing center and vote centers. The Registrar said open observation is a standing part of its effort to maintain voter confidence, and it welcomes observers from political parties and the general public.
