New Series I Savings Bond Rate Is 5.51%: Fixed Rate of 1.40% Is the Highest Since November 2006

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Promotion · GSM News

The U.S. Treasury announced on October 30 through TreasuryDirect that Series I savings bonds issued from November 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027, start with a composite annual rate of 5.51 percent, which applies to the first six months after issue.

The rate combines two parts: a fixed rate of 1.40 percent, the highest since November 2006, which stays with each bond for its entire life, and a semiannual inflation rate of 2.04 percent, which resets every six months with the price index. The previous issue window opened at a 4.26 percent composite rate, including a 0.90 percent fixed rate.

Series I bonds are sold only electronically through TreasuryDirect, starting at $25 and in penny increments above that, with an annual purchase limit of $10,000 per person.

On holding rules, a bond cannot be cashed in during its first 12 months, and cashing in before five years costs the last three months of interest. The interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local taxes.

The Treasury sets new Series I rates every May 1 and November 1; the next reset is due May 1, 2027.
