Midterms: Major U.S. Networks Project Democrats Retake House Control

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

On the night of the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, NBC News, CNN, CBS News and Decision Desk HQ, among other major U.S. news organizations, projected that Democrats will win a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, retaking control of the chamber from Republicans. Reuters reported the projections on Tuesday night, saying Democrats were on track to win majority control of the House and would be in position next year to challenge President Donald Trump's agenda.

All 435 House seats were on the ballot, with 218 needed for a majority. Republicans had held the chamber by a razor-thin margin, and Democrats needed a net gain of only three seats to retake control. NBC News estimated Democrats could finish with about 244 seats, while CNBC and MS NOW each projected Democrats would win at least 225 seats. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the next speaker of the House.

As of publication, the Associated Press had not yet formally called control of the House. Polls in California and other western states closed at 8 p.m. Pacific Time and counting was continuing, with the final margin still to be determined as more districts report.

Control of the Senate had not been projected by any major decision desk as of publication. Democrats recorded two Senate flips during the night: the Associated Press called North Carolina's open seat for Roy Cooper, and the AP later called South Carolina for Annie Andrews, who defeated incumbent Sen. Darline Graham in an upset. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to retake the Senate majority, and control of the chamber remained undecided pending further counting.

President Trump responded to the results during the night, saying, 'I wasn't on the ballot.' The new Congress is scheduled to convene in January 2027, and a Democratic-led House is expected to increase oversight and investigations of the Trump administration. Counting is still developing, and GSM will continue to follow the results.
