Mexico's Sheinbaum Rejects Texas Claim to Nine Rio Grande Islands as an Electoral Issue

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on November 3 that the US state of Texas's claim to nine islands in the Rio Grande is an "electoral issue", and that Texas has no authority to settle questions of sovereignty on the border. Asked at her morning press conference whether the claim was electorally motivated, she answered: "Yes, from my point of view, yes." She added that the government of Texas does not decide such questions, which are decided through the bilateral boundary commission.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said on October 27 that a review of historical records and surveys had "confirmed these nine islands belong to the State of Texas". Mexico's Foreign Ministry rejected any unilateral change to the border on October 30, citing the 1970 Boundary Treaty, which places the international line at the centre of the river's normal channel, and said only the International Boundary and Water Commission (CILA) can determine which side of the border each island is on. Mexico said it will monitor any action in the area.
