Mariners Hire 36-Year-Old Jason Kanzler as Manager to Replace Wilson

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The Seattle Mariners announced on November 3 that they have hired Chicago Cubs farm director Jason Kanzler as the club's new manager. Kanzler, 36, replaces Dan Wilson, who was dismissed. Kanzler had served as the Cubs' director of player development, overseeing the organization's minor league system, players and coaching staff.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said in a statement that the team believes Kanzler can lead the club back to the postseason. Wilson departed after the 2026 season, in which Seattle went 76-86 and failed to sustain the previous year's form. In 2025, the Mariners won the American League West — their first division title in 24 years — and reached Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, one win short of the franchise's first World Series.

Kanzler becomes the second-youngest manager in the majors, behind only Washington Nationals skipper Blake Butera, 34. He served on the Houston Astros' major league coaching staff in 2022 and 2023, including the 2022 World Series championship season. As a player, Kanzler spent three seasons in the Minnesota Twins' minor league system after being drafted in the 20th round out of the University at Buffalo. Seattle remains the only major league team never to reach the World Series, and how the new manager activates a roster built around Cal Raleigh will be the biggest storyline of next season.
