Archdiocese of Atlanta's 'Open Doors' Program Provides Inclusive Education for 22 Students With Diverse Learning Needs

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Faith · GSM News

The "Open Doors" program of the Archdiocese of Atlanta's Office of Catholic Schools is helping 22 students with diverse learning needs receive an education in Catholic schools. Atlanta is in Fulton County, Georgia. The Georgia Bulletin reported on the program's progress on November 3, telling the story of Harper Mitchell, a student with Down syndrome learning in the sensory room at St. Mary's School in Rome. Some families learned about the program through friends.

The program aims to let students with intellectual disabilities and other diverse learning needs attend Catholic schools, learning and growing alongside their peers rather than being excluded. Open Doors emphasizes inclusion and belonging: schools provide individualized support, including auxiliary spaces such as sensory rooms and dedicated teaching arrangements, helping the students take part in class, make friends and build confidence.

In the report, Harper colors intently in the sensory room, her face full of enthusiasm, showing the positive effect of inclusive education on a child's daily life. Program leaders say Catholic schools' acceptance of students with diverse learning needs is a concrete way for a faith community to practice caring for every child, and it also teaches other students from a young age to accept and respect differences.
