Giants Designate Lefty Sanmartin for Assignment, Decline Wick's 2027 Club Option
The San Francisco Giants announced a new round of roster moves on November 3: left-handed pitcher Reiver Sanmartin was designated for assignment, and right-hander Rowan Wick's club option for the 2027 season was declined, though Wick remains under team control. The Giants posted the moves on social media, placing Sanmartin's future into the designation process.
Sanmartin has pitched five seasons in Major League Baseball, spending his first four with the Cincinnati Reds before the Giants claimed him off waivers on November 6, 2025. San Francisco finished this season 65-97, fourth in the National League West, and missed the playoffs; the post-season roster cleanup is now under way.
Earlier reporting noted that designating Sanmartin returns the Giants' 40-man roster to 40 players. Wick spent this season rehabbing an injury; the club declined his 2027 option, but he remains arbitration-eligible and his future is still to be decided. For a team coming off a disappointing season, such moves are a routine part of an offseason rebuild, and fans will watch whether the Giants make further additions to their pitching staff.
