Tigers Get Pitcher R.J. Petit Back in Rule 5 Return From Rockies

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan — The Detroit Tigers got a familiar arm back on November 3: 6-foot-8 right-hander R.J. Petit was returned to the club under Rule 5 draft rules.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the Colorado Rockies took Petit from the Tigers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 Rule 5 draft, but he missed the entire 2026 season after Tommy John surgery with an internal brace, never pitching for Colorado, and was returned on November 3. Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg confirmed the move.

Petit last pitched in 2025, posting a 2.44 ERA with 79 strikeouts and 22 walks in 66 1/3 innings. Drafted by the Tigers in the 14th round in 2021 out of Charleston Southern University, he rejoins the organization's pitching depth as he works back from surgery.
