Indiana Childcare Voucher Waitlist Falls 78% as Nearly 48,000 Children Receive Support

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Indiana's childcare voucher waitlist has fallen sharply, Indiana Public Media reported on November 3: the list dropped from 41,175 children in May to 9,006 at the end of October, a decline of 78%, and Governor Mike Braun credited the progress to a major state investment. The state had paused new childcare voucher enrollments in late 2024, pushing more families onto the waitlist. In April, Braun asked the State Budget Committee to direct $200 million from a related fund to the Child Care Development Fund, with a goal of moving 14,000 children off the list.

In a statement released November 2, the state said nearly 48,000 Indiana children now receive Child Care Development Fund vouchers, up from 40,000 in May. The fund is a federally funded program administered by the state that provides childcare vouchers to low-income families. The state said it will continue enrollment and issuance work to ease families' childcare costs, and reminded eligible families that they can check qualifications and registration procedures through official channels, where staff can help verify documents and reduce repeat trips caused by incomplete information.
