Capitol Christmas Tree Stops in Lolo on November 3, Its Only Western Montana Stop

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Lolo, Missoula County, Montana — The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree stopped at the Lolo Community Center on the afternoon of November 3 to meet local residents, its only stop in western Montana this year. Travelers' Rest State Park and the U.S. Forest Service hosted the free family event from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The tree is a 76-foot Engelmann spruce harvested on October 24 in the Lochsa-Powell Ranger District of Idaho's Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests before beginning its tour to Washington. From Lolo, the tree travels south on Highway 93, with its next stop on November 4 in Salmon, Idaho; on Saturday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. it will also meet residents in eastern Montana at the Gardiner Rodeo Grounds.

For a small community like Lolo, the visit is a rare public occasion: residents can see up close the giant tree that will stand on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and learn how it is transported from a national forest. Organizers said the whistle stops are free and family-oriented, meant to share the holiday spirit with communities along the route while introducing the national forests and public lands.
