Wild River Fire in White Mountains Grows to 378 Acres, 11 Percent Contained

Near Gorham, Coos County, New Hampshire — A wildfire in the White Mountain National Forest grew further on November 3 to about 378 acres and was only 11 percent contained. The Wild River Fire is burning in steep terrain about seven miles southeast of Gorham, near Evans Notch. It was first spotted on the afternoon of November 1 and has spread through dry timber, snags and leaf litter.
By the evening of November 2, the federal government had assigned 50 personnel to the fire, assisted by drones and helicopters, but the steep, rugged terrain has made cutting containment lines difficult. The Forest Service said drought has left mountain vegetation very dry, the fire remains actively burning in timber and leaf litter, and the cause is still under investigation.
Officials said the fire currently poses no major threat to people or property and no evacuations have been ordered. The Forest Service urged drivers passing through smoke to slow down and turn on headlights, and asked the public not to fly personal drones near the fire area so as not to interfere with suppression work. Cloudy skies, mild temperatures, light winds and scattered showers in the coming days may aid firefighters.
