Iowa Coach Ferentz Voices Support for Former Hawkeyes Linebacker Campbell, Hospitalized With a Neck Injury

University of Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz opened his weekly news conference on November 3 by voicing support for former Iowa player Jack Campbell, now a Detroit Lions linebacker, who suffered a neck injury in the November 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings and remains in the hospital. Ferentz said he wanted to express support to Campbell's family and, most importantly, to Jack himself, that he had been in contact with the family, and that the family would share updates in its own time, asking that its wishes be respected.
Ferentz said Iowa fans know how much impact Campbell had on the program, that he was not only an outstanding player but an outstanding leader, in Detroit as well, and that the whole team was thinking of him and hoped every Iowa fan would do the same. Campbell played at Iowa from 2019 to 2022 and joined the Lions as a first-round pick in 2023; in 2022 he was a first-team All-American, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and winner of the Butkus Award for the nation's top linebacker. The Lions have said Campbell is resting in the hospital and early indications are positive, without releasing further medical details.
