Illinois Cancels 2027 and 2028 Football Games With the Missouri Tigers

On November 3, 2026, the University of Missouri athletics department confirmed to the Columbia Daily Tribune that the University of Illinois has canceled its football games against the Missouri Tigers scheduled for 2027 and 2028, leaving Missouri to find a new Power-conference opponent for each of the next two seasons. Missouri athletic director Laird Veatch said in a statement that the school was disappointed by Illinois's decision to withdraw from multiple future games, including a 2027 home game for Missouri. Illinois instead chose a home-and-home series with Notre Dame in 2027 and 2028, according to reports.
Missouri and Illinois last met on the football field in 2010. Under a breach clause in the game contract obtained by the Tribune through an open-records request, Illinois could owe Missouri $500,000. Under the SEC's updated scheduling rules, members must play nine conference games and schedule one Power-conference opponent each year. Missouri is 6-2 this season and hosts Texas in Columbia on Saturday, November 7.
