Iowa's Governor and Senate Seats Are Both Open as Absentee Ballots Top 464,000

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Iowa polls were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on November 3. Voters in Des Moines, Polk County, chose a governor, a U.S. senator, U.S. House members and several state officers, and decided a constitutional amendment and judicial retention questions. Both of the state's top offices were open at once for the first time in years: Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds and Republican Sen. Joni Ernst both declined to run again. The governor's race pitted Republican businessman Zach Lahn against Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand. In the Senate race, Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson faced Democrat Josh Turek, and polls showed a very close contest. Early participation was strong: the Secretary of State had received and counted 464,216 absentee ballots by the morning of November 2. Two of Iowa's four U.S. House seats also had no incumbent running, with Hinson moving to the Senate race and Rep. Randy Feenstra having lost his bid for the gubernatorial nomination, putting more focus on the fight for House control. Regular absentee ballots had to reach county auditors by 8 p.m. on November 3; a postmark alone did not guarantee counting.
