Kentucky Early Voting Tops 438,000 as Voters Pick McConnell's Senate Successor

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Kentucky polls were open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time on November 3, with anyone in line by 6 p.m. able to vote. Louisville voters in Jefferson County decided a U.S. Senate race, the mayor's office, county attorney, sheriff and county clerk. Early voting set a record: State Board of Elections data showed more than 438,000 Kentuckians had already voted by mail or early in person, up nearly 26% from 337,975 in the 2022 midterms, including about 377,000 ballots during the three no-excuse early voting days of October 29-31. In Jefferson County, nearly 72,000 residents voted early from October 29 to 31, about 13% of registered voters, including more than 47,000 Democrats and about 18,000 Republicans. The Senate race was the statewide focus: voters chose a successor to Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is not seeking an eighth term, with Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr facing Democrat and former state Rep. Charles Booker. The U.S. Department of Justice planned to send federal election monitors to Jefferson and Fayette counties in two- or three-person teams to check accessibility, provisional-ballot handling and language assistance; monitors only observe and record and may not interfere with voting or speak with voters inside polling places. Louisville's TARC transit system offered free rides all day on Election Day.
