Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Society · GSM News

British celebrity hairstylist and haircare founder John Frieda died on November 3 at the age of 75. His Instagram account announced the news the same day, saying Frieda had passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. The announcement did not disclose a cause of death. The fashion trade publication The Business of Fashion and Parade magazine followed with reports confirming the news.

'It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family,' the announcement began. It continued: 'John was more than a mentor to us; he was a true icon of the hair industry. He was the person who taught us everything, believed in us, and made us better.' It concluded: 'His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us. We will continue to do him proud. Rest in peace, John. You will be forever in our hearts.'

Born Alan Howard Frieda on July 9, 1951, in London, England, Frieda was a third-generation hairdresser. He entered the London salon business in the 1970s, opened a salon with fellow stylist Nicky Clarke in 1976, and won attention for the 'Purdey' cut he created for actress Joanna Lumley. In 1979 he opened the first salon under his own name on New Cavendish Street in London. According to The Business of Fashion, his career spanned more than half a century and his clients included Princess Diana and Madonna.

It was haircare products that carried Frieda's name into millions of homes. The Frizz Ease range he built with his business partner, designed to tame frizzy hair, became his brand's best-known line, followed by ranges such as Sheer Blonde for blonde hair, bringing salon-inspired products to everyday shoppers. In 2002, Frieda sold the haircare business to Japan's Kao Corporation while retaining his salons.

Frieda was previously married to Scottish singer Lulu, with whom he had a son, Jordan. After the announcement, figures from the hair and fashion industries posted tributes on social media. As of publication, his family and brand had released no further arrangements, and no cause of death has been disclosed.
