Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

HO CHI MINH CITY — Fulbright University Vietnam announced on November 3 that Nguyen Bao Hoang has been appointed chairman of its board of trustees, effective November 1. He succeeds Chris Helzer, who chaired the board from 2025 to 2026 and will remain as vice chairman.

Nguyen is a founding trustee of the university and chairman of Phoenix Holdings, an investment firm with interests in technology, consumer goods and retail, financial technology, education, sports, media and entertainment. He holds a bachelor's degree in classics from Harvard University, a medical degree from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. Public records show his wife, Nguyen Thanh Phuong, is a daughter of former Vietnamese prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

University president Dinh Vu Trang Ngan said Nguyen's personal story embodies the transformative power of a well-rounded education. Fulbright University Vietnam is the country's first private, not-for-profit university; its founding chairman, Thomas Vallely, served from 2012 to 2025 and is now founding chairman emeritus.
