Carlos Altunar-Rueda, 33, a citizen of Mexico unlawfully residing in Jamaica Plain, in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston to unlawfully reentering the United States after deportation. U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin scheduled sentencing for January 27, 2027. Altunar-Rueda was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2026; in January 2026, he was charged by criminal complaint with the same offense.

Altunar-Rueda was deported from the United States in 2013 and again in 2019. In May 2018, he was convicted in federal court in Massachusetts for unlawful reentry of a deported alien. In November 2015, he was convicted in New York state court for sexual abuse in the third degree, sexual abuse in the second degree and forcible touching.

The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. The defendant is subject to deportation upon completion of any sentence imposed. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and David T. Wesling, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case. The announcement was made by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts.
