Iowa Waterloo Man Sentenced to 70 Months for Possessing Stolen Firearm Found in His Waistband

A Waterloo, Iowa, man has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for possessing a stolen firearm. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa said Da'Tellyon Dawon Nix, 19, of Waterloo, received the term after a June 24, 2026, guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon. He was sentenced on November 3, 2026.
Nix was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand to 70 months' imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
Information from the plea and sentencing hearings showed Nix had previously been convicted of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a felony crime of violence involving firing a gun at multiple people. On January 28, 2026, officers had information that Nix possessed a gun, and a warrant was outstanding for probation violations. Officers followed Nix as he left a Chuck E. Cheese in Cedar Falls and stopped the car he was in. Nix attempted to flee and was tased, at which point he admitted a firearm was in his waistband. The firearm had previously been stolen from a federal firearms licensee.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyndra Lundquist and investigated by a federal task force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, the FBI and the ATF, assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office and the Cedar Falls Police Department. The case file number is 26-CR-2009. Nix is being held in the U.S. Marshals' custody pending transport to a federal prison.
