University of Washington Entering Class Grows 3.5% to 12,552: 7,333 International Students Enrolled, Washington Residents Three-Quarters of New Class

The University of Washington in Seattle, King County, Washington, on Nov. 3 released its official enrollment count for the 2026-27 academic year: 12,552 first-year and transfer students enrolled across its three campuses this fall, a 3.5% increase from last year, with Washington residents making up three-quarters of the incoming class and nearly four in 10 new students being first-generation college students.
Total enrollment across the three campuses is 63,866 students: 52,338 in Seattle, 6,458 at UW Bothell, the highest ever for that campus, and 5,073 at UW Tacoma. Of the total, 46,987 are undergraduates and 16,879 are pursuing graduate or professional degrees. Transfers from Washington community colleges rose on all three campuses to a combined 2,629.
Among international students, 1,077 new first-year and transfer students enrolled across the three campuses, 99 more than in 2025. Total international enrollment, however, stands at 7,333, down about 7% from last year, which the university said correlates with national international student enrollment declines. Of those, 6,951 are in Seattle, 222 at Bothell and 160 at Tacoma.
First-generation first-year students rose 4% from last year and Pell Grant recipients rose 5%, and the student body includes residents of 38 of Washington's 39 counties.
UW President Robert J. Jones said seeing so many Washington students choose the UW reinforces the university's commitment to making a world-class education accessible to people from every corner of the state, and that as a public university serving the entire state it has a responsibility to reflect the people and values of the communities it serves.
The official count, taken 10 days after the start of the fall quarter, will later be presented to the UW Board of Regents.
