Bridgeport Wins Over $1 Million Federal Grant for Waterfront Park: 3.65-Acre Park to Add Kayak Launch, City Matches Dollar for Dollar

The City of Bridgeport, in Fairfield County, Connecticut, announced on Nov. 3 that it has been awarded over $1 million through the National Park Service's Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program (ORLP) for Phase I of the Sliver by the River development project, with the city matching the grant funds dollar for dollar.
Sliver by the River, located at 5 Stratford Avenue behind the Bridgeport Transit Center, will be a brand new 3.65-acre park featuring a kayak launch, a floating dock, a nature playground, a shade pavilion, a multi-use open lawn, a terraced lawn with seating, benches and trees, along with native plantings that help cool the air while reducing the urban heat island effect. The ORLP program supports locally led urban restoration and recreation projects and improves equitable access to the outdoors.
Mayor Ganim thanked the Trust for Public Land and Groundwork Bridgeport for helping secure the grant and the National Park Service for awarding the funding to begin Phase I, saying he is excited to see what will come of Sliver by the River and remains committed to creating more green spaces in the city and recapturing the waterfront, so residents have increased accessibility to spend more time outdoors.
Of the twelve states that have been awarded the grant, Bridgeport is the only city in Connecticut to receive it, the city said.
