USDA Awards $250,000 to Expand Ohio Beef Processing: Winner's Meats to Grow Capacity and Direct-to-Consumer Shipments

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Ohio State Director Charles Tassell and U.S. Representative Warren Davidson announced in Yorkshire, in Darke County, Ohio, on November 3 that USDA will invest $250,000 in local beef processor Winner's Meats through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP).

Winner's Meats is a family-owned independent meat processor based in Yorkshire. The company operates a federally inspected processing plant, a retail grocery and meat shop, and wholesale supplies to more than 50 retailers and restaurants. The grant will help the company expand its processing capacity and increase direct-to-consumer shipments of processed beef.

Tassell said President Trump is focused on strengthening the Great American cattle herd, and that boosting Ohio's local beef processors will help USDA fulfill this goal, adding that the grant will help Winner's Meats remain a pillar of Darke County for years to come.

According to USDA, the primary purpose of MPPEP Phase 4 is to support the Ohio beef industry by diversifying the meat and poultry supply chain and opening local market opportunities. An applicant's facility must primarily process cattle to be eligible, though funds or equipment may also be used for processing meat and poultry at the facility.

MPPEP is managed by USDA Rural Development and provides grants to help eligible independent processors expand their capacity, encouraging competition and sustainable growth in the U.S. meat processing sector and improving supply chain resiliency.
