Follow-Up: 37th APEC Ministerial Meeting Held by Video, Wang Yi Calls for a Strong Finish to the APEC China Year
The 37th APEC Ministerial Meeting — the joint meeting of foreign and trade ministers — was held by video conference on November 3, co-chaired in Beijing by Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and China's foreign minister, and Wang Wentao, China's minister of commerce. According to Xinhua, Wang Yi told the meeting that China is ready to work with all members to take the building of an Asia-Pacific community deeper and further.
Wang Yi said China would work with all parties to complete the closing stage of the APEC "China Year" and contribute to fruitful outcomes at the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which he described as an important meeting bearing on the future development of the Asia-Pacific. Wang Wentao said APEC members should continue contributing practical and effective "Asia-Pacific solutions" to development in the region and the world.
At the foreign ministry's regular press conference the same day, spokesperson Mao Ning explained the video format: as this year's host, China attaches great importance to the ministerial meeting and, weighing various factors and seeking the best results, decided to hold it by video; she said China believes the meeting will achieve positive outcomes and make full preparations for the leaders' meeting.
Background: GSM reported on November 2 that the Chinese foreign ministry had announced Wang Yi and Wang Wentao would co-chair the meeting on November 3.
