Oregon Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Merkley, Who Wins Re-election

The Associated Press called Oregon's U.S. Senate race on the evening of November 3 for Democratic incumbent Senator Jeff Merkley, who defeated Republican state Senator David Brock Smith to win a fourth term. Oregon is on the Pacific coast in the northwestern United States, and its capital is Salem.
The AP results page showed 615 of the state's 1,318 precincts reporting, about 46.66%, with an estimated 46.69% of votes counted; Merkley had 559,198 votes to Smith's 345,272, followed by Chris Henry with 16,174 and Gary Dye with 7,527, plus 643 write-in votes. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.
Merkley was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008 and has held the seat since; Smith, a state senator from Port Orford, decided to run last fall during the federal government shutdown. With Merkley's win, Democrats continue to hold both of Oregon's U.S. Senate seats.
