Iowa Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Turek as Democrats Flip the Seat

The Associated Press called Iowa's U.S. Senate race on the evening of November 3 for Democratic candidate Josh Turek, who defeated Republican U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson as Democrats flipped the seat. Iowa is in the Midwestern United States, and its capital is Des Moines. The seat was open because incumbent Senator Joni Ernst did not seek re-election.
The AP results page showed 1,506 of the state's 1,656 precincts reporting, about 90.94%, with an estimated 91.6% of votes counted; Turek had 644,188 votes to Hinson's 585,117, followed by Libertarian Thomas Laehn with 38,866. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.
Turek is an Iowa state representative and a former member of the U.S. national wheelchair basketball team and two-time Paralympic gold medalist; Hinson has served in the U.S. House since 2021 and gave up her House seat to run for the Senate. With Turek's win, Iowa's two U.S. Senate seats are now split between the two parties.
