Texas Governor Election: AP Calls Race for Hinojosa, Who Defeats Abbott

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Associated Press called Texas's governor's race on the evening of November 3 for Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa, who defeated Republican incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, who was seeking a fourth term. Texas is in the southern United States, and its capital is Austin.

The AP results page showed 6,965 of the state's 9,900 precincts reporting, about 70.35%, with an estimated 70.36% of votes counted; Hinojosa had 4,137,331 votes to Abbott's 3,101,098. The AP declared Hinojosa the winner at 11:17 p.m. Eastern, and Abbott called Hinojosa to congratulate her and conceded that night. Counting is continuing; the figures are unofficial and final results are subject to certification by state election officials.

Hinojosa, 52, is a state representative from Austin and a lawyer who campaigned on public education and household costs. When she takes office in January 2027, she will be Texas's first Latina governor and its first Democratic governor since Ann Richards left office in 1995, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the office. Abbott, first elected in 2014, was seeking an unprecedented fourth term.
