Ohio Vote Count Progress: Acton and Brown Hold Narrowing Leads, Both Races Too Early to Call

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Vote counting continued in Ohio on Tuesday night, November 3, with Democrats holding narrowing leads in both of the state's key races — for governor and for the U.S. Senate — but neither race had been called. According to the latest Associated Press count, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton had 1,544,055 votes, about 52.4%, to Republican Vivek Ramaswamy's 1,401,447 votes, about 47.6%, with 62.71% of precincts reporting. In the Senate race, Democratic candidate and former Senator Sherrod Brown had 1,584,314 votes, about 50.9%, to Republican incumbent Senator Jon Husted's 1,530,237 votes, about 49.1%, with 67.59% of precincts reporting. The Associated Press listed both races as too early to call.

Earlier in the evening the Democratic leads were wider: according to The Columbus Dispatch's election-night coverage, with about 40% of votes tallied as of 8:45 p.m. Eastern Time, Acton led by 59% to 39% and Brown led by 56% to 40%. The margins narrowed substantially as counting advanced and had not reached a call threshold. Ohio's election-night results are unofficial returns from county boards of elections; each county board must certify its results within 21 days of Election Day for final statewide certification, so an election-night lead is not a final result.

On the same night, Ohio's statewide Issue 3, which would enshrine the state's photo voter ID law in the state Constitution, was passing in early returns, recorded at 58% to 42% in The Columbus Dispatch's 8:30 p.m. snapshot, and the Associated Press and CNN later projected it to pass. Ohio voters also decided statewide executive offices and two seats on the Ohio Supreme Court on November 3, with counting still under way.
