JAPAN CRAFT: Art for Living Opens November 6 at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles With Some 2,000 Works by 123 Living Makers

JAPAN CRAFT | Art for Living – Hyakkō opens Friday, November 6, 2026, at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, and runs through January 24, 2027. Announced on October 20, the exhibition gathers approximately 2,000 works by 123 living makers, craftspeople and artisans from across Japan. It is curated by Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the company behind MUJI, and spans ceramics, glass, wood, leather, metal, bamboo and urushi lacquer.
According to the organizer, Hyakkō joins hyaku, meaning one hundred, for vast diversity, and kō, craft, encompassing people, practice and objects. Drawing on the utilitarian beauty of the 1920s mingei folk-craft movement, the exhibition centers the individual makers: some 2,000 works are presented side by side in the main gallery without genre hierarchies, alongside films of makers at work, written reflections and an interactive library where selected works can be handled.
Japanese craft isn't just a preserved artifact from the past, it is a living tradition that evolves through everyday use, said Yuko Kaifu, president of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. In the exhibition, no two works are alike.
On November 7, the day after opening, curator Takahiro Nagata of the Ryohin Keikaku creative team gives a fireside chat. JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles occupies two floors at Ovation Hollywood, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028, and its WAZA Shop will offer a selection of works by participating makers.
