Disney Expected to Lay Off Thousands of Staffers in Biggest Round of Cuts This Year

The Walt Disney Company is expected to lay off thousands of staffers in what would be its biggest round of job cuts this year, Variety and Bloomberg reported on November 3. Managers in some divisions have reportedly been asked to identify annualized cost savings of up to 20%, which can be reached through job eliminations, other expense reductions, or a combination of both.
The cuts are expected to reach multiple divisions, including television networks and the motion picture studio, with some parts of the company affected more than others. No precise headcount or timetable has been announced, and Disney declined to comment. Chief Executive Josh D'Amaro reportedly aims to reinvest part of the savings into film and television programming, technology, theme parks and the cruise business.
The move would be Disney's fourth round of layoffs this year: the company eliminated about 1,000 roles in April, and later rounds reached corporate functions, human resources and information technology teams. Disney had about 231,000 employees at the end of its last fiscal year and is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results on November 17.
