Bachelor Star Matt James Stops Mid-Race at the NYC Marathon to Pop Balloons for a Couple's Gender Reveal
On Sunday, November 1, the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon was held in New York City. Reality TV star Matt James stopped in the middle of his run, not for a rest, but at the request of a couple on the sidelines who wanted him to reveal the sex of their unborn baby. The video, posted by James himself on Instagram, quickly went viral, and U.S. outlets including Parade and Us Magazine followed up.
According to Us Magazine, the couple held a sign reading "Do Our Gender Reveal!" next to three large black balloons covered in question marks. James took the pin they offered and popped the balloons, and pink confetti burst out, revealing that the couple is expecting a girl. He jumped up and down shouting, "Ohhh, it's a girl! Congratulations! It's a girl!", hugged the parents-to-be, and then got back to his race.
James captioned his video "NYC Marathon Gender Reveal." Fellow Bachelor star Tyler Cameron commented, "This is amazing." Parade reported fans calling it "the coolest thing I've ever seen," with one dubbing James the "king of side quests."
James, 34, starred on Season 25 of ABC's The Bachelor and was the show's first-ever Black lead in its 24-season history. According to the finisher list published by organizer New York Road Runners on November 2, James completed the race in 3:45:37. A total of 61,146 runners finished this year's marathon, breaking the world record for the largest marathon for the third consecutive year.
