Philippine Mayon Volcano Shows Minor Explosive Activity Again: 1,600-Meter Ash Plume, Alert Level 3 Remains

Albay Province, Luzon, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that Mayon Volcano produced minor Strombolian activity at its summit crater at 8:22 a.m. on November 3, sending an ash plume about 1,600 meters above the crater that drifted southwest. Alert Level 3 remains in effect.
On October 30, Mayon had a moderately explosive eruption lasting about six minutes, with an ash column reaching roughly 3,000 meters. PHIVOLCS raised the alert from Level 2 to Level 3 that day, signalling a new phase of magmatic eruption and a heightened likelihood of a hazardous eruption. Albay authorities evacuated residents inside the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone, with more than 1,400 people from Tabaco, Camalig and Ligao moving into evacuation centers; welfare officials later said aid had reached over 2,000 evacuees.
In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin on November 4, PHIVOLCS recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes and kept Alert Level 3 in place. The institute's director has said an upgrade to Level 4 cannot be ruled out if activity intensifies, and warned that heavy rain on ash deposits could trigger lahars.
PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited because of possible rockfalls, lava flows, lava fountaining and pyroclastic density currents, and advised pilots to avoid airspace near the summit.
